Life purpose is something that everyone should find out - the sooner the better. Sometimes it is difficult to realize what things we really love to do or really want to achieve and what things the society has made us believe we want to do or obtain. Here are some tips that I have found very useful in finding my own life purpose.
- Start by writing a list of things that you do for fun and you fully enjoy. Think about the parts of your work that you like, the volunteer jobs, hobbies like sports, making arts, reading books, composing music and so forth. Imagine yourself into a situation where you have inherited lots of money, are a billionaire and never have to work again. What would you do then? How would you spend your time? Write these things down as well, even if you don’t do them now. This list is your passions. These things are the ones that you love to do and bring happiness and joy in your life.
- Think about people that you admire the most and why they are admirable. Write the names down. You might for example admire Bono, the lead singer of the rock band U2, because he lives by expressing himself to the whole world, living exactly how he wants and contributing to the society in many ways. You might admire Simon Cowell in the American Idol because he has the guts to tell the truth (or at least his real opinion). Find as many names as possible. When you’re done, realize that the things that you appreciate in other people are also in you! You are interested and attracted of these things because they move you, which means that they are part of your life. If these two names were your list, starting to express yourself to the world, contributing to the society as well as you can and sticking to the truth in the situations where that is the best solution would be the correct action steps to take you toward your purpose. Use these admirations of other people to show up in the world. These things are your actions.
- Write down a list of things that you are naturally good at. Ask your friends to assist you with this as sometimes we are blind to see ourselves objectively. These natural gifts and talents could be something like: great visual eye, perfect sense of humor, ability to be empathic, good talking skills etc. These are your talents. They come naturally and profoundly, without having to use lots of energy. Some people are really good at mathematics or arts, but there are many other types of talents as well. There are gifted teachers, listeners, sportsmen and independent thinkers. We are supposed to use the things we are naturally good at when serving our life purpose.
- Take a look at the list of Passions, Actions and Talents lists and spend ten minutes every morning doing some of these things you have written down. Sing, dance, draw, tell a truth about something you’ve been hiding, call your relative or friend you have forgotten, overcome your shyness and call the girl you like.
- Take a notice of how you feel. If you are living your life purpose, you will feel excited, happy and perfectly alive. If you can’t feel these things, you should go back to your notes and think if there is anything you might have forgotten or if you were not completely honest with yourself.
- Feel the fear and do it anyway. This famous sentence includes a huge truth of life. Every one of us is feared sometimes, but those who can do things even though they fear are the brave ones. It is very normal to feel fear when you start doing something new for the first time and start living for your life purpose. Everything that is worth doing in this life will take some energy and might make you feel a little scared. I can promise you that the rewards of winning yourself are huge, I genuinely think these moments as the most important ones in our lives because they are the moments when you can really grow! Just take the next step.
More Tips
- Always try to find new ways of incorporating your Passions, Actions and Talents more and more into your daily life. By doing this, your life purpose is starting to unfold. Can you bring your gift of good visual eye to your work? Can you spend one hour of your daily routines to write an article to teach other people how to do things that you are good at and enjoy doing?
- As the time spent fulfilling your life’s purpose increases, you will notice that it is quite easy now to make decisions in life because you will always ask the question: “Is this new opportunity in harmony with my passions, actions and talents?” Gradually you will spend more and more time of your life by living your life’s purpose and this will make you feel happier and healthier than you could imagine.
- The problem with our minds is that we often look at our purpose as a thing that will fulfill all our dreams right now or can only answer our questions in the far future. While the ultimate purpose in life may be found in a few years time, you should find ways to start RIGHT NOW. It can be a side project, it can be a small part of your current job, but you can and should start expressing your purpose in tiny bits already today.
- Remember that many times we will find our purpose along the way as the new opportunities and thoughts start coming on our way. Many times it can be said after one’s life has ended that he or she had a purpose, based on the choices and actions of one’s life.

Pardon my commenting on an older post, but this is my very favorite topic! I’ve found a few things that I’m very passionate about, and now I’m trying different ways to combine them or maybe enjoy all of them. One thing that I get totally absorbed in is creating blogs. I’ll “forget to eat” if I’m doing a major overhaul on one of my own sites. So – I hope – and wish – that someday I can do that full time.
Thanks for the great post!
Christie´s last [type] ..What issues have impacted introverted students’ lives the most
It’s only a good thing to make the most of the old posts as well, so thanks for that, Christie!
It seems like we have both found the same passion and have the same side effects, too!
I have also really hard time in finding time for eating because I’d like to use that time with my blogs instead. Too bad I really would not need to lose weight, because this would be the best way to do it. You just don’t feel hunger when you are completely absorbed to something you love to do.
